Game: Squish
Type: Net & Wall
Cycle: II, III
Activity Level: High
Tactics: Get in appropriate position in oder to return the ball and score on opponent.
QEP: Comp. I, II: Recovering, using the space available, manipulation.

Description:

Layer 1: Each student is given a tennis ball and then they must place themselves in front of a wall in their own space away from others. The students must practice throwing the ball against the wall and then receive it before it can bounce more then once. This goes on for about 5 minutes.

Layer 2: Students are now partnered up and are set up in an area in front of a wall about the width of a badminton court and the length of half a court. The objective of the game is to move their opponent around the playing space. When one player shoots the ball off the wall the other must adjust, get to the ball and catch it before it bounces twice. The the opponent shoots at the wall and so on.

Layer 3: After 5 minutes the objective is now to score points. The players must shoot the ball in a way that their opponent will not be able to catch and return the ball. A zone is established a meter from the wall. The ball must bounce over this zone otherwise the receiving opponent gains possession and a point. Points are obtained when the opponent is unable to return a shot before it bounces more then once in the playing court. Points may be given to the opponent when the ball bounces in the zone or if it bounces out of the court.  At the end of each game groups must shake hands and say “Good game”.

Modification:

SPEED SUB BADMINTON

Game: Speed Sub Badminton
Type: Net & Wall
Cycle: III
Activity Level: High
Tactics: Speed, communication, and get in appropriate position in oder to return the ball and score on opponent.
QEP: Comp. I, II: Manipulation, hitting a moving target, recovering, types of grips.

Description:

Layer 1: Every student in the class is given a badminton racket and they all must find a partner. Each group must line up on either side of the badminton nets that are set up in each court, in one quarter. Two games would be played on one court with four students on each court. The objective is for each group to maintain a rally over the net using a badminton birdie. The birdie must not fall on the floor otherwise the rally is dead. This lasts for about 5 minutes.

Layer 2: Speedy subs are now established. There are still four players per court but only two players can be on the court at a time and there are two players on each side of the net. The objective of the game is to move the opponent(s) around in the playing space. Because only one person is allowed on each half of the court at a time when a player hits the birdie they must run off the court from the side and the speedy sub will run in from behind to return the opponent’s shot. The person who came out after the first shot must set up behind the court boundaries because they then become the speedy sub and so on. This cycle happens for each shot and on both sides of the court.

Layer 3: The objective is now to score points. A point is given when an opponent can’t return the shot and the birdie drops in the scoring boundaries. Possession is kept until other team can score a point. Points can also be given to the opponent if the other player’s shot goes out of bounds without hitting the floor within the scoring boundaries, the receiving opponent now gains possession of the birdie. After 5 minutes students must find a new group to play against.  At the end of each game groups must shake hands and say “Good game”.

Modification:
  • More speedy subs can be added.
  • A sponge ball may be used and the one bounce rule introduced.
  • Net may be lowered.

Safety:
  • Students must watch out where they swing their rackets.
  • They must be aware of where they are running when they leave the court.
  • Students must wear goggles.
  • If a ball enters another court the students must wait outside the court for the ball to be passed back.
  • Students must not aim at their opponent when returning or serving.

MINI BADMINTON

Game: Mini Badminton
Type: Net & Wall
Cycle: II, III
Activity Level: Moderate
Tactics: Get in appropriate position in oder to return the ball and score on opponent.
QEP: Comp. I, II: Types of grips, manipulation, recovering, catching opponent wrong footed.

Description:

Layer 1: Every student in the class is given a badminton racket and a sponge tennis ball. Then they must all find their own spot somewhere in the gym. The students have to try different ways of keeping the ball up in the air using the racket. One bounce is allowed if students need it, but the objective it to keep the ball in the air without letting it drop. This lasts for about 5 minutes.

Layer 2: The students then must find their own spot somewhere in front of any wall in the gym. The objective it to keep a constant rally with themselves. They must only hit the ball with an underhand swing. After serving the ball to the wall and it comes back, it must bounce once before they can hit the ball back to the wall. This goes on for about 5 minutes.

Layer 3: Students are now paired up with a partner and given each half a badminton court as a playing space. The line in the middle divides the playing areas and this is the line the ball must pass over before it bounces. The objective of the game is to keep a rally with the opponent. One player must serve the ball to the opponent and the opponent must return the ball; they must try to keep this going as long as they can. The ball must bounce once before the opponent can return the serve.

Layer 4: The objective now is to make your opponent move around. The players must hit the ball in an area of the opponent’s playing space that is away from the opponent.

Layer 5: Students must now try to score points. The students must hit the ball over in a way that the opponent will not be able to receive the ball. If the ball bounces twice in the opponents court its 1 point and a point is also given if the ball bounces once in the court and the opponent can’t return the ball before it goes out of their own half. A point may be given to the receiving opponent if the player will the ball fails to hit the ball in the court at all. The player who scores the point restarts with the ball. If the opponent scores when the other player serves not only do they get a point but they now start with the ball. After 5 minutes of play the teacher will signal for everyone to switch partners.  At the end of each game groups must shake hands and say “Good game”.

Modification:
  • The one bounce rule can be an options, if a player can return the ball without the bounce it is still good.

Safety:
  • If a ball enters another court the students must wait outside the court for the ball to be passed back.
  • Students must not aim at their opponent when returning or serving.

LOB TENNIS

Game: Lob Tennis

Cycle: II, III
Activity Level: Moderate - High
Tactics: Get in appropriate position in oder to return the ball and score on opponent.
QEP: Comp. I, II: Using the space available, throwing the object, recovering.

Description:

Layer 1: The class is divided into groups of two, given a tennis ball and 4 cones per pair and each group is placed in their own half of a badminton court. The two students must place the 4 cones on either side of the dividing line about 1 meter apart from the other on both ends forming a rectangle. This rectangle is the neutral zone. The objective for the two students is to keep a rally going. In order to do this one player starts with the ball and tosses it over the neutral zone. The initial lob is called a serve. The ball may not land in the neutral zone and the receiving player must let the ball bounce once before he or she can catch it. When the receiver catches it they lob it back to the other student. This continues to maintain the rally.

Layer 2: The objective now is to make your opponent move around. The players must lob the ball over the neutral zone but this time away from the opponent. The receiver must adjust to get to the ball and lob it back over. The ball still must bounce once before it can be caught.

Layer 3: Now the students must score on each other. A player must lob the ball over in a way that the opponent will not be able to receive the ball. If the ball bounces twice in the opponents court its 1 point and a point is also given if the ball bounces once in the court and the opponent can’t return the ball before it goes out of their own half. A point may be given to the receiving opponent if the player will the ball fails to lob the ball in the court at all. The player who scores the point restarts with the ball. If the opponent scores when the other player serves not only do they get a point but they now start with the ball. After 5 minutes of play the teacher will signal for everyone to switch partners.  At the end of each game groups must shake hands and say “Good game”.

Modification:
  • The neutral zone may be removed and the dividing line is now what the ball must bounce over.
  • Players may use their hands as a paddle by slapping the ball (moderate and appropriate force) instead of catching the ball.
  • The one bounce rule can be an options, if a player can return the ball without the bounce it is still good.

Safety:
  • If a ball enters another court the students must wait outside the court for the ball to be passed back.
